In 2019, I have entered the third year of my doctorate at Sichuan University, and the writing of my doctoral dissertation on the governance of the Terai region in Nepal has also entered the most critical stage, and I urgently need to conduct field research in Nepal. Fortunately, Sichuan University, as a member of HUC, selected and sent me to the ICIMOD for an 8-month visiting study and to complete my doctoral dissertation, and that was the time when HUC accepted me.

During this period, we participated in various activities host and co-host by HUC, including the Second Lead Author Meeting of the IPCC Working Group II Sixth Assessment Report held in Kathmandu. I was lucky enough to assist in organizing the 2019 HUC Academy, during which we visited Chitwan and met young scholars from the HKH region. It is worth mentioning that my work and academic research during my time at HUC have received full support from my colleagues, which enabled me to achieve a balance between the two. During this process, I completed the interviews with relevant people in Nepal, conducted the field research on the Terai, and completed the writing of the first draft of my doctoral dissertation.

I have benefited a lot from ICIMOD’s international environment, diverse and equal working atmosphere, and professional research team. My working style so far still benefits from this valuable experience in ICIMOD. Most importantly, I gained the extremely precious friendship with HUC colleagues. Their support and companionship made my days in Nepal even more memorable. When I left Nepal, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. The sudden global blockade prevented us from seeing each other for more than three years, but our friendship and cooperation did not stop there. I believe that in the days to come, we will have more interactions. I also believe that HUC, as a growing network of universities, will continue to play an important role in promoting academic exchanges and knowledge sharing among regional universities.
